ABOUT SNEHA

Social Need Education and Human Awareness (SNEHA) was formed in 1984. SNEHA’s work covers villages in the coastal districts of Nagapattinam and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and has gained momentum in the last several years due to changes in the macro-economic policy in the fishing sector.

SNEHA has reached fisherfolk and other coastal-dependent communities (including Dalits) who are dependent on coastal resources for their livelihood and fisheries allied activities. SNEHA facilitates the processes of empowerment through training, information dissemination, enabling participation in decision-making, creating awareness through literacy and involving in participatory research to raise micro level issue to the the macro policy level.

The main focus of SNEHA has been women and children. SNEHA has facilitated the formation of community-based organisations such as Women Sangams, Self Help Groups, Taluk, and District Level Federations were promoted for the empowerment of women.
